About Us
Southern Hockey Cards came about as I, Scott, had a relapse in my card addiction. I was a sports card nut back in the 90’s (primarily baseball) and used to set up at card shows & hold card show garage sales specializing in Derek Jeter cards, which was very lucrative being that I was in his hometown. I got out of the card business after Jeter won his first World Series with the Yankees as I knew that was going to be the peak of his collectability in the area (his cards were going for 4-5x Beckett in the Kalamazoo area) and I didn’t like the trend of wax packs starting to cost more than minimum wage, which I felt was going to price out the next generation of collectors.
Fast forward 25 or so years and I’ve been playing hockey (before you ask, I sucked) for a few years until injuries, Covid, medical issues, and fatherhood derailed things and have delayed me getting back on the ice. I became an off-ice official for Birmingham Bulls home games but that was really my only tie to the game. I thought that collecting hockey cards would be a fun way to stay connected to the sport that I love as well as a hobby that I could do with my twin sons as they got older. Now it has become truly a family affair where my wife now enjoys ripping and box breaking even more than me.
In restarting my addiction, I quickly learned (which didn’t shock me) that hockey card collectors and resources were much scarcer in Alabama than in Michigan. You may find some overpriced blaster boxes at the big box stores or may find a couple boxes and if you’re lucky, some singles at a LCS. I want to help grow the hobby by promoting hockey cards by setting up at local card shows as well as promote local card shops in the South that carry hockey cards so fellow collectors know where to look to feed their addiction…I mean hobby.
